Hanover Park seeking donations for military dog tribute

Hanover Park wants to add a life-size tribute to military dogs in one of the most prominent places in town: outside village hall.

The blue collar suburb has launched a campaign to raise $25,000 to install a metal cast of a German shepherd fronting Lake Street. The statue would greet visitors to the village's veterans memorial.

So far, a committee charged with the effort has collected about $2,500, Mayor Rodney Craig said. He's optimistic the village will meet their goal.

"We're on the move," Craig said. "We've got a start."

The statue would recognize the often overlooked contributions of the canines, Craig said.

"It will give some notoriety to the support of war dogs," Craig said.

Donations can be sent to: War Dog Memorial, c/o Village of Hanover Park Public Works Department, 2041 Lake St.
