Woodstock man charged in Mt. Prospect theft

A 51-year-old Woodstock man has been arrested and charged by Mount Prospect police with felony theft by deception $10,000-$100,000 and felony forgery.

Joseph A. Nowakowski, of the 9600 block of Spring Lane, was arrested June 3 at his home. He is accused of stealing about $30,000 to $50,000 between April 2013 and January 2014 from Autobarn, 333 W. Rand Road, Mount Prospect, where he was a finance officer, police said. Nowakowski resigned unexpectedly on Jan. 31, authorities said, and the thefts were discovered in March. The dealership told police Nowakowski tampered with at least 17 customer contracts, taking deposits and placing some of the money in other accounts using his personal logins, according to police reports. At times, he apparently forged customers' signatures, reports said.
