Round Lake U19 Girls Soccer Team wins Sportsmanship Medal in National Tournament

7/11/14 - Torrance, CA. - The ladies of Round Lake U19 Girls Soccer Team "Storm" have won the Sportsmanship Medal at the AYSO 50th Anniversary National Games, Held in Torrance, CA during the week of 6/29 thru 7/6. They were only one of 4 teams from outside California to compete in this historic tournament, marking 50 years serving America's youth, with the six philosophies of Everyone Plays, Balanced Teams, Positive Coaching, Player Development, Open Registration and Good Sportsmanship. The team scored a perfect 200 points, which is awarded based on the behavior of not only the players and coaches, but also the parents/fans as well. Coach Jose Velarde noted on the last day of games "There were many tears of pain that morning... but they kept focused, and kept playing. At the end the TEAM had done what they needed to do... they gave it their all... what more could their coaches and fans ask for..." The team would go on to win one of the tournament games versus a team from Arizona.

This is the third time that the U19Girls have brought home the Sportsmanship Medal, they previously won in 2008 in Oahu, Hawaii and also in 2010 in Wellington, FL.

AYSO Region 428 Round Lake also celebrates 30 years of operation this year. According to Regional Commissioner and U16 Boys National Head Coach Joe Nadeau, "AYSO 428 Region Round Lake repeatedly proves that a soccer program is not only affordable but also teaches young players the necessary skills to be successful both on and off the pitch"
