  • South Elgin's Antonio Danesi hops over Prairie Ridge's Connor Schneider, who caught the ball on a fly, during the class 4A state baseball third place consolation game at Silver Cross Field in Joliet. A lot of baseball action shots happen around second base and involve force-outs, stolen base attempts, doubles, etc. This photo was taken with a 400mm lens and captures the runner's quick hopping instincts to avoid being tagged out. On the play though, Connor Schneider caught the ball for the third out. This photo was published in the Perspective column in the print edition of the Daily Herald.

  • Amanda Gatsch, 8, of St. Charles, squeals with delight as Riddle the cockatiel, owned by Dana Connell, 11, of St. Charles, perches on her head while he waits for his turn to be judged at the Kane County 4-H Small Pets show at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles on Tuesday. Riddle, 13, was adopted from a rescue by Dana and both were making their first appearance at the show. They later won a blue ribbon and grand champion in their category. Dana is a new member of the 'A Bit More 4-H Club' based in Hampshire.
