Tablets for all students unfair to taxpayers
This is a follow-up to a letter in the Your Views section regarding the purchase of 4,000 electronic devices for Elgin Area School District U-46.
I agree that this should not be a purchase that is passed on to the taxpayers of Elgin. If it were school books, which are reused year to year, that's one thing. If students get to "keep" a $200 to $400 dollar electronic device, this should be the responsibility of the parent. Or are they going to be returned to the school for the following year's students?
Also, on the June 9 front page there is a story regarding Kane County's potential budget problems. This is in regards to youths at the juvenile detention center receiving five hours per day of classroom instruction. Increasing costs may cause taxes to go up and not maintain the freeze on property tax levy. Say what?
They're in juvenile detention because they did something wrong. It's called punishment for a crime. Next we will be taxed so they, too, can have electronic devices.
Please stop putting the burden on taxpayers, many who are retired and on a fixed income.
