Jazz Consortium Big Band returns to Durty Nellie's Sunday

Following its well-received debut at Chicago's legendary Jazz Showcase nightclub, the 17-piece Jazz Consortium Big Band returns to its regular monthly venue at Durty Nellie's Pub, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine, on Sunday, July 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. $10 cover, or $5 for students 17 and under. Website, www.durtynellies.com. Phone, (847) 358-9150.

"The Jazz Showcase is world-famous for presenting well-known and respected jazz musicians, and it was a thrill to be playing there," said bandleader Roy Vombrack. "But there's no place like home, and we're looking forward to playing for everyone back at our musical 'home', Durty Nellie's."

Besides hearing the five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones and rhythm section of the Jazz Consortium (www.jcbigband.com), patrons can also order food from Durty Nellie's full menu throughout the performance. The show is all-ages, so families can listen and dine as well.

The Jazz Consortium Big Band first came together in the mid-1970s, consisting of former and current University of Illinois, Northern Illinois University and Northwestern University musicians with a love of Big Band music. The group went on to perform at jazz clubs, nightspots and concerts throughout the Chicago area, including an appearance at the Chicago Jazz Festival.

The Jazz Consortium disbanded in the early 1980s, with most of the members going on to full-time music careers. The band reunited four years ago, and has since been performing second Sundays monthly at Durty Nellie's Pub in Palatine, as well as playing numerous concerts and clubs throughout the area, most recently at the Jazz Showcase.
