Cary celebrates the Fourth with music, fireworks

The Cary Summer Celebration at Lions Park in Cary drew large crowds to the pre-Fourth of July event, hosted by the Cary Park District, on Thursday night.

Families and friends gathered on blankets and lawn chairs as they listened to the 70s and 80s tunes covered by local band, Alex and The AllStars, and munched on snacks. Children danced on the lawn and shook tambourines provided by the band.

Chris Betz of Cary organized a small group of friends, saying she planned to make it a Ravinia-type celebration of listening to music and bringing a cooler. She even brought a trio of red, white, and blue balloons to decorate their mini picnic table.

“I like it because it's close to home;(it's) very family-friendly,” said Chris Zaruba of Cary, one of Betz's friends. “It's just a nice way to celebrate the holiday.”

Zaruba gave the fireworks show high marks.

“I came last year, and I was really impressed,” she said.
