'Human Adventures in the Honeybee World' at MCC

McHenry County College will host "Human Adventures in the Honeybee World," a seminar presented by Larry Krengel from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, in the MCC Luecht Conference Center. The event is sponsored by the Wildflower Preservation and Propagation Committee.

Honeybees have made headlines recently as their current problems bring their importance to our food supply to the forefront. Krengel will address the important role of pollination, the consequences of extinction of the honeybee and actions that can be taken to help the honeybees.

Krengel, also known as the local "bee guy," has been working with bees for 30 years. In that time, he has moved from keeping two colonies of bees to keeping 40 colonies of bees.

Following his retirement as a high school science teacher, he accepted the position of the editor of the Bulletin of the Illinois State Beekeepers' Association and now acts as a director of the local beekeepers' group.

He teaches classes for beginning beekeepers and speaks to groups about the intrigue of spending time with the bees. He produces honey that is sold locally, maintains hives for local nature centers, and has a passion for raising honeybee queens.

The event is free and open to the public. The college is at 8900 Route 14 in Crystal Lake.
