State land purchase expands popular hunt area
A state-funded land purchase has expanded a popular hunting area in northwestern Illinois.
Sauk Valley Media reports 275 acres are being added to the Big Bend State Fish & Wildlife Area. It's in Whiteside County near Prophetstown along the Rock River.
The property cost $550,000. It extends fish and wildlife area to a total of around 2,650 acres. Much of land is forest, native grassland, wetland and marshes.
The area is known primarily for its excellent hunting. Available game includes deer, pheasant, quail, rabbit and fox.
The funds for such land purchases come from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources' Open Lands Trust. The money is appropriated by state lawmakers to acquire land for public use.
