Historical Speaker series continues Saturday at Depot Market

The Historical Speaker Series, held weekly at the Depot Market, continues this week with the presentations given by Dundee area families, community leaders and the Dundee Township Historical Society. The programs are held at 11 a.m. Saturdays inside The Depot, 319 N. River St., East Dundee.

June 28 will feature David Hill of Platt Hill Nursery. He is the grandson of the nursery's founder, William Hill. Platt Hill Nursery, founded in 1855, is one of the oldest nurseries in the country. It served as a cattle feeding operation during the Great Depression and World War II. Most of the mature evergreen trees throughout the area were planted by William Hill.

July 5 will feature Marge Edwards of the Dundee Township Historical Society. She will give a presentation on the Underground Railroad in the Dundee area. Find out which home in Dundee was an important part of the Underground Railroad and which prominent local historians helped slaves escape to their freedom.

July 12 will feature Phil Aleo, local author and area history buff. He will give an in-depth presentation of the history of Carpentersville. Find out how Carpentersville got its name, how many years it's been a community and how it came to be the community it is today.

July 19 will feature Lexy (Haeger) Estes of Haeger Pottery. She is the great-granddaughter of Haeger Pottery founder David Haeger. Haeger Pottery was established in 1871. Haeger Pottery thrived, in a large part, due to being located on the banks of the Fox River. Haeger Pottery was a large part of the rebuilding of Chicago after the Great Chicago Fire.

"Our area has a very rich historical background." said Lael Miller, East Dundee village president. "With new families moving into the area, we think it is important to offer the community a small piece of history about the Dundee area each week. We're also very grateful to the volunteers who have agreed to take the time to come and share their knowledge."

July 26 will feature the second Antique Appraisal Faire. Is your grandma's treasure junk? Find out at the Appraisal Faire. Appraisals will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is required for those who want their items appraised. There is a $10 fee per item appraised, with a two-item limit. There will not be a Historical Speaker Series presentation that day.
