Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon on electric car tour of Illinois

SPRINGFIELD - Illinois' lieutenant governor has hit the road to encourage more businesses to offer charging stations for electric cars.

Sheila Simon on Tuesday will continue her trip across the state, promoting a federal effort to increase workplace charging stations. The tour is organized by a community college-based environmental group called the Illinois Green Economy Network.

The Carbondale Democrat says Illinois' community colleges are leading the way in using sustainable technology by providing charging stations for faculty, staff and students.

Event organizers say they hope the statewide tour will erase drivers' worries that electric cars can't drive long distances. The trip begins at a southern Illinois community college and will conclude in Chicago's suburbs.
