2 workers killed in Pekin industrial accident
PEKIN, Ill. - Two workers have died from carbon monoxide poisoning at an agricultural products plant in central Illinois.
The (Peoria) Journal-Star reported gas in a rail tanker car killed the workers at Agridyne LLC in Pekin shortly after noon Tuesday. Officials say the two workers were cleaning the car which contained a small amount of corn-based liquid when they were overcome by carbon monoxide that had built up inside it.
One worker fell into the rail tanker car before his colleague made an attempt to rescue him. The rescuer died on the scene. The second victim was taken by ambulance to Pekin Hospital and pronounced dead around 1:30 p.m.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Pekin police and fire officials plan to investigate the accident.
