Scattered thunderstorms force airport delays, cancellations

The National Weather Service is saying there's a chance of scattered, possibly strong thunderstorms tonight until 1 a.m., and the spotty weather has forced airport delays and cancellations.

O'Hare International Airport tweeted before 10 p.m. that delays were averaging about 30 minutes and more than 175 flights were canceled. Midway tweeted that delays averaged 45 minutes.

Storms across northern Illinois have the potential to produce damaging winds, the weather service said. But it did not issue any watches or warnings.

"If these storms can develop, then some strong wind gusts may occur through early evening," the weather service said.

Aside from that, storms are not expected to be severe.

There next will be small chances for thunderstorms particularly Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, the service says.
