Schwarber homers in Cougars' victory

On Thursday night, Kyle Schwarber fell just short of belting his first professional home run.

On Friday night, Schwarber - the Cubs' first-round pick of the MLB amateur draft earlier this month - hit a solo home run to center field ain the fifth inning, and the Kane County Cougars captured a 6-4 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Fifth Third Ballpark in Geneva.

Jeimer Candelario delivered the game-winning hit in the eighth inning, a 2-run double to right-center field that scored Yasiel Balaguert and Jacob Rogers and gave the Cougars (2-0, 47-25) a 6-4 lead.

In the bottom of the first, Schwarber hit a 2-out double, then scored on an RBI double by Ben Carhart.

The Cougars received a solo homer by Jake Hannemann in the fourth.

Cougars reliever Corbin Hoffner earned the win and Tyler Bremer picked up his ninth save.
