Hawthorn Woods self-defense class:

Hawthorn Woods Police will host a women's self-defense program, with classes on July 10, 15, 22 and 29. The classes are from 6 to 8 p.m. at the village barn, 2 Lagoon Drive, and the cost is $10 for residents and $12 for nonresidents. This interactive program will provide training in recognizing and responding to dangerous situations, and techniques for successfully defending against and escaping the types of attacks most often encountered by women. Participants will learn how projecting confidence through body language can make them less of a target. Organizers say the class is great for women headed to college, or who live or travel alone. For information, contact the village at (847) 438-5500 or email at info@vhw.org.
