Kids can attend engineering camps at MCC

McHenry County College's "Kids and College" program offers one- and two-week sessions June 16-Aug. 7.

"Kids and College" offers many new and innovative programs that provide an engaging experience for youth and teens entering first through ninth grades, giving them a jump-start on the school year, exposure to 21st-century skills and exciting careers.

Building a superstructure that can survive an earthquake, hurricane or typhoon; designing the next generation spacecraft for missions to Mars and beyond; engineering an ROV that can explore the deep seas; or designing an autonomous robot that can be used to solve real world problems are just a few activities campers will be engaged in while participating in MCC TECH Camp.

This full-day STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) camp is offered six different weeks throughout the summer and is a way to expose students to engineering fields, develop creative and critical thinking skills, work with an art/technology specialist in MCC digital media labs and participate in team building/sports.

Campers entering first through ninth grades can attend a weeklong camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $159. Before and after care is also available from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 5:30 p.m.

The Kids and College Summer Academy academic and enrichment classes have been designed to continue the learning over the summer in the areas of language arts, math, technology/digital media, and study skills. The classes are offered from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., with an opportunity to stay for lunch. The tuition for a weeklong class is $99; two-week class is $149.

"The classes combine quality, innovation and just plain fun while learning for our community's youth and teens for the 21st century and beyond," said Laura Beaupre, coordinator of College and Career Readiness.

"The classes are affordable, engaging for all types of learners, close to home and a safe place for kids and teens to meet new friends and make great memories."
