Manufacturing students post wins at competition

South Elgin and Streamwood high school students built up numerous wins during the regional 2014 TMA (Tooling and Manufacturing Association) Precision Machining Competition in May.

"We are proud of our Precision Manufacturing students who put their skills on display and are already being recruited by area machinist companies," said Elgin Area School District U-46 Superintendent José M. Torres. "Our Project Lead the Way courses are providing students with real-world skills and a path to success in the job market."

"The competition enables students to gauge their skills against others as well as promote themselves to manufacturers," said South Elgin High technology education teacher Russ Bartz. "Manufacturers attend looking for talent to recruit. The precision manufacturing program prepares students for entry level jobs in manufacturing as well as postsecondary training that will lead to higher level positions."

During the competition, South Elgin High senior Ben Romano was recruited by Termex Corporation, which will pay for his apprenticeship training as a tool room machinist.
