QB Beneventi transferring to Fenwick from Benet

A familiar face will be missing from Benet's football team this fall.

Redwings football coach Pat New confirmed on Saturday that quarterback Jack Beneventi is transferring to Fenwick.

Beneventi, committed to the University of Iowa, was a two-year starter for Benet who is finishing his junior year at the Lisle school. As a sophomore he helped lead the Redwings to the Class 7A semifinals and again quarterbacked Benet to the 7A playoffs last fall.

New said the transfer became official last week. Beneventi's family is in the process of moving to Oak Park.

"It was a surprise, certainly," New said. "We're going to meet as a team on Monday and I'll have a better idea of where we're at after we meet."

Beneventi, the 29th-ranked senior recruit in the state, according to Rivals, threw for 3,800 yards and 27 touchdowns in his two years as a varsity starter. After weighing scholarship offers from numerous colleges, the 6-foot-6 quarterback in December committed to Iowa.

New said Beneventi had been working out with his Benet teammates until a couple of weeks ago. According to New, last week Beneventi began working out with Fenwick's players.

"I'm sure a lot of our players are surprised, but it's something that's out of our control," New said.

With Beneventi's departure, New said Jack Sznajder enters the summer as the Redwings' No. 1 quarterback. As a freshman last fall, Sznajder started for Benet's sophomore team.

"The last time we started a sophomore quarterback we made it to the state semifinals," said New, referring to Beneventi's sophomore year. "(Beneventi's) got great skill and I'm sure he'll do well his senior year. Now it's our job to focus on us and go forward as a team."
