Girl Scouts help create Oak Grove Trail in Hawthorn Woods
The Village of Hawthorn Woods Public Works Department met and worked with Girl Scouts from Hawthorn Woods Troop 500 and 447 to beautify the community.
The relationship started in mid-April when Director of Public Works Erika Frable and Assistant Director of Public Works Matt Bartlett met with the group at the Public Works facility on N. Old McHenry Road. During this tour, the girls learned about the responsibilities of the Public Works Department, including snow plowing, maintaining our parks and streets, and assisting with special events.
The tour included a visit to the salt storage dome and each Scout had the opportunity to climb into a two-ton plow truck. Of course, working in Public Works, you must always remember safety first and each Scout was equipped with a pink hard hat.
On May 23, the Girl Scouts reunited with Frable and Bartlett at Community Park and volunteered to assist in an initiative to create Oak Grove Trail, an urban forest within the park to add shade for park visitors.
The Scouts planted approximately a dozen white oak seedlings that were 18 inches to 2 feet tall along one of the pathways at Community Park. During their work, the Scouts learned about tree health and how to protect the seedling for optimal growth.
The Girl Scouts each received a certificate of appreciation from the village and earned a Girl Scout community service patch for their time and hard work with the Hawthorn Woods Public Works Department.
The Public Works Department was grateful for the opportunity to make this improvement to the community and to educate youth on community involvement, environmental friendliness, and working together to celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day initiatives.
