Cougars beat Clinton to pick up 40th win
The Kane County Cougars picked up their 40th win of the season Thursday night with a 7-3 win over the Clinton LumberKings (29-29) at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva.
Tyler Skulina (4-2) picked up the win with his third quality start, allowing two earned runs on two hits and striking out five in six innings. Seon Gi Kim (0-1) suffered the loss. Michael Wagner tossed the final three innings and kept Clinton scoreless for his first save of the season.
With losses by Quad Cities and Peoria on Thursday, the Cougars are one win from a spot in the first-half playoffs. The magic number for a division title is two, and both spots can be decided on Friday.
The Cougars let the Lumber Kings jump out to early leads (1-0 in the first and 3-1 in the fifth) before taking a 4-3 lead in the sixth thanks to two errors on the same play.
The Cougars added three more runs in the eighth on a run-scoring single, a throwing error and a sacrifice fly to close out the scoring.
The Cougars will go for a sweep and a playoff berth on Friday in the series finale. Daury Torrez (5-3, 3.36) will make the start for the Cougars against the LumberKings' Edwin Diaz (2-2, 3.22). First pitch from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
