Meet artists of 'Rhythm in Color' exhibit at Yellow House

Yellow House Artists present their summer show, "Rhythm in Color," through June 28, at the Elgin Artspace Gallery, 51 S. Spring St., Elgin.

An artist's reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 6, and provides the opportunity to meet the exhibiting artists.

The gallery hours are: 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The gallery is closed on Fridays except during the reception on June 6. Artwork will be for exhibit and sale.

Yellow House Artists is group of artists from the Chicago area who work in oil pastel and/or oil stick. There will be 29 artists exhibiting original artwork. The show will feature sketches and paintings of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. A donation of 10 percent of artwork sales will be divided equally between the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and Food for Greater Elgin.

The show also will feature a new painting by George Shipperley, who was recently inducted into the Fox Valley Fine Arts Hall of Fame. Shipperley has been a teacher and mentor for many members of the Yellow House Artists.

A panel discussion, "The Artistry of Oil Pastel," is scheduled for Saturday, June 21, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the gallery. Three celebrated oil pastelists, George Bruce, George Shipperley and Carol Zack, will discuss and share the unique attributes of this medium and demonstrate effective techniques for creating quality paintings.

The artwork will be on display during the "Pallet to Palate" event from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, June 23. This food and wine tasting event with music, art, and artist demos in the gallery space is a fundraising event to benefit Food for Greater Elgin (FoodforGreaterElgin.org).

The inspiration for the Yellow House Artists group originated in a quaint yellow house in St. Charles, where an initial group of these artists created an exquisite art gallery during the 2007 St. Charles Fine Art Show. The group has since grown to include nearly 50 members who are interested in creating and showing their work as well as informing the public about the qualities of this little known medium. Together they offer their gallery quality paintings for exhibit and sale in group events at area art venues. Members of Yellow House Artists use unique techniques, taking advantage of the special qualities of the oil pastel medium.
