Hersey club takes second at Chicano College Bowl

John Hersey High School's Latin American Student Organization recently took second place at the Highland Park High School Hispanos Unidos Club 17th Annual Chicano College Bowl. Senior Kim Roman, juniors Ivett Delgado and Julian Lopez, and freshman Crista Mondragon competed against 11 other area high school teams to capture the award.

A fun and interactive way for students to learn about Mexican-American history, the Chicano College Bowl is based on the 1960s Chicano Movement. It is a knowledge bowl tournament that helps to create a positive cultural identity.

"The tournament celebrates and recognizes the Mexican-American's role as common history keepers," said sponsor Celia De Leon. "It also recognizes and develops the participants' role as activists in their common future."

The bowl includes a scholarship test and an oral competition about Chicano history based on two videos from the PBS Chicano Documentary series.

This is the LASO's 15th year participating in the bowl and the second time the team has brought home a trophy. Hersey's junior varsity team comprised of sophomores Guadalupe Arroyo, Elene Balleza and Erika Oropeza, and junior Gabriela Celaya also performed well in the tournament.
