Prosecutors said Mayer took the photos -- described in court records as a "prepubescent child" -- and distributed them to the undercover officer. He was arrested near his home as authorities were performing a search of the residence, according to court papers.

Court papers indicate that Mayer admitted sending the photos to the undercover officer and that authorities also spoke to the child depicted in the images. The unidentified child, whose relationship to Mayer is also unknown, indicated that Mayer had inappropriately touched the child as well. It's unknown if Mayer has been charged with any additional crimes related to the allegations.

Mayer faces a maximum of 20 years in prison if convicted of the federal charges.
