Boring backyard

Our boring backyard sits in Schaumburg behind our "new" old home that we purchased in August 2012.

It's a great property in a convenient location with lots of potential, but it's been neglected and unloved for a number of years, and we've undertaken the task of bringing it forward to the lovely and inviting property it can eventually become.

The backyard was disfigured by a broken down deck and a pool that had caved in, which we removed (except for the posts set in concrete that helped to brace it).

We now have a large hole to fill to reclaim that yard space.

Budget: $5,000 (lighting only)

From the experts:

In order to achieve the color, privacy and style requested for this makeover, we started with a new privacy fence along the lot line, and added a large low deck for lounging and entertaining.

Leading to the deck from the house is a beautiful winding stone path, accented by colorful landscaping.

We also added vibrant flowering plants along the side of the deck to give the sense of the "private Garden of Eden" the client wanted. By using quality low voltage LED lighting we were able to bring this new sanctuary to life.

Previously this yard used solar-powered landscape lights, which do not typically give off much light and have a short life. We suggest putting in a low-voltage landscape system for better lighting, long life, and low maintenance.

A) Copper LED path lights illuminate the winding pathway, while also highlighting low foliage. The copper naturally patinas to a beautiful verde green color over time. And with a 15-year warranty, this homeowner doesn't have to worry about replacing lights for a long time!

B) LED adjustable spot lights can be aimed up at higher plants and focal points. Multiple beam spreads are available, making this suitable for many applications.

C) LED well lights placed around trees graze up the trunk, bringing out the beautiful textures and color of the trees. We recommend using three around larger tree trunks.

D) Small LED lights mounted to the deck posts add a gentle illumination to the area, providing ambient light to the space.
