State ag officials to spray for gypsy moths
The Illinois Department of Agriculture is getting ready to begin spraying for gypsy months, an invasive species that can kill oak trees.
The (Joliet) Herald-News reports the state agency plans to begin spraying parts of northern Illinois in the next several weeks. The aerial treatments are timed to disrupt the month's mating season.
The invasive species can devour leaves on oak trees in its caterpillar stage.
Scott Schirmer, a plant and pesticide specialist supervisor for the Illinois Department of Agriculture, says the leaf-eating insects can lead to deforestation.
