The Crystal Lake South baseball team guaranteed itself a winning season with a 2-1 walk-off win against rival Crystal Lake Central in Monday's Class 4A CL South regional playoff opener.
Paul Wille's bases-loaded single to right field with one out in the bottom of the seventh advanced No. 4 CL South (16-14) to a semifinal against No. 1 Barrington (25-9) on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Starting pitcher Ryan Wilkening improved to 5-2 by holding No. 5 CL Central (7-22) to an unearned run on 7 hits. He struck out 7 without issuing a walk. The Gators collected 8 hits, led by 2 apiece from Wille, Casey Oliver and AJ Howaniec. Jason MacAlpine took the loss for the Tigers.
No. 13 West Chicago 3, No. 20 Streamwood 1: Kevin Sojda's RBI single in the top of the seventh scored Chad Caminitti to cut the deficit to 3-1, but with the tying runs in scoring position and no outs the Sabres popped up twice and grounded out to end this regional opener. Dave Kordik pitched a 4-hitter for host West Chicago (16-17), which advances to face No. 4 Schaumburg in a Lake Park regional semifinal on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Sojda (1-8) took the loss for Streamwood (7-26).
No. 4 Genoa-Kingston 3, No. 5 Hampshire 1: The season came to an end for Hampshire (13-18) in the opening game of the Class 3A Hampshire regional played in Genoa. The Cogs advance to face No. 1 Sycamore (27-7) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
