The Des Plaines Park District is Recruiting New Members for the Friends of the Parks Volunteer Organization

The Des Plaines Park District is recruiting new members for the Friends of the Parks, volunteer organization, composed of local business and community leaders, parents, high school and college students, and active adults who are committed to expanding recreational and cultural opportunities for the residents of Des Plaines. The organization has two missions: 1. To provide scholarships for children so that they can participate in classes, programs, camps, and events at the Des Plaines Park District, and 2. To promote cultural and recreational events as part of a healthier lifestyle for the citizens in Des Plaines.

"When you become a member of the Friends of the Parks, you join other volunteers who are committed to making a positive difference in their neighborhoods," said Don Miletic, Assistant Executive Director. The more residents that get involved, the more opportunities we can provide for our children." "Membership in the Des Plaines Park District Friends of the Parks provides a unique opportunity to ensure that our community can enjoy the many benefits of our recreational, athletic, and cultural programs," said Linda Traina, Superintendent of Recreation. "We want to help families enjoy healthy activities, benefit from our facilities, and have a creative outlet."

Becoming a member of the Friends of the Parks requires a commitment of approximately 30 volunteer hours per year. Time is spent at monthly meetings (first Monday of the month from 6:00-7:00pm); planning, coordinating, and securing sponsors for annual fundraising events and at Park Grand Openings and Ribbon Cuttings; the annual fishing derby; and the Halloween House Decorating Contest.

"We are in the planning stages for one our first fundraising activities, a 'Glow in the Dark Golf Night' to be held at the Lake Park Golf Course," Traina said. "We are calling on volunteers and benefactors to join us. We can always find a niche for anyone who wants to be involved. You can come for a one-time project, a couple of events, or commit for a year. Come to a meeting; you'll be glad you did!"

If you or someone you know is interested in joining the Friends of the Parks, please contact Linda Traina, ltraina@DPParks.org or call 847-391-5700.
