Awning falls, injures two boys in Mundelein

Two boys were injured around noon Sunday when they were struck by an awning that fell from a commercial building in Mundelein's Butterfield Corners shopping area, authorities said.

Few details were immediately available. Mundelein police issued a news release saying police and emergency personnel from the Mundelein and Countryside fire departments responded to the 1400 block of South Butterfield Road, near the intersection of Route 60 and Butterfield Road, and found two children injured by the fallen awning.

One of the children was treated at the scene and released to a parent, authorities said. The other was taken to a hospital for further treatment.

The ages and conditions of the boys were not available.

Police said they have turned the investigation over to Mundelein Building Department officials, who were on the scene Sunday afternoon.
