Geneva Library board picks a director

The Geneva Library board Thursday hired a new library director.

Christine Lazarus will fill a position that became open when former director Matt Teske stepped down in January.

Lazarus is manager of access services at the Skokie Public Library. She formerly was head librarian at the Illinois Institute of Art in Schaumburg.

"Christine's experience, knowledge and enthusiasm are a perfect match for Geneva," library board President Esther Steel said in a news release. "She will be able to build upon our tradition of excellent service, while guiding the library through the challenges and opportunities that we will face in the future."

Lazarus will be paid $91,000 a year. Her start date has not been determined, as it will depend on when she can leave the Skokie job after giving notice next week, interim Geneva Library Director Marilyn Boria said.

The assistant director position will also become vacant soon, as longtime employee Peggy Carlson is retiring at the end of June.

Teske worked for the Geneva Library since 2006, first as an assistant director, then director from 2008 to January 2014. He took medical leave in November and December, was named assistant director in January, and left the library in April.

The library board used a search consultant to find applicants, and interviewed three finalists.
