Bond denied for former priest
A defrocked Catholic priest and convicted child molester has been denied bond after being charged in a sex crime that authorities say occurred in 2005.
Daniel McCormack appeared in Cook County court Thursday. Police arrested him Wednesday at a state facility in Rushville on a warrant for aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child. Prosecutors say the victim was 10 years old.
McCormack's attorney, Daniel Coyne, says the former priest is receiving treatment, suffers from a mental disorder and is a "sexually violent person."
McCormack pleaded guilty in 2007 to abusing five children and was sentenced to five years in prison. He was removed from the priesthood.
The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests says in a statement that McCormack is one of Illinois' "most egregious predator priests."
