Kaneland Harter Middle School qualifies 36 athletes for state track meet

At the May 17 sectional AA meet in Plano, the track and field teams at Kaneland Harter Middle School qualified an unprecedented number of athletes for the Illinois Elementary School Assocation's State Track Meet.

Thirty-six seventh- and eighth-graders will compete in Peoria this Friday and Saturday.

In addition to the individual state qualifiers, both the eighth-grade girls and boys track teams earned a plaque for their third-place finish at the highly competitive sectional meet.

"In my experience, this is the toughest sectional we've been in," said Harter Middle School athletic director Tom Huels. "Our athletes' success has been truly astonishing."

Among the individual success stories is that of Lauren DiSandro, who increased her personal best by more than 2 feet to qualify in the long jump, and Connor Park who qualified in both the discus and shot put.

In an email to all Kaneland Harter Middle School staff on Sunday, Huels wrote: "Coach Self, Huettemann, Bellino and Larson have worked long hours in preparation for yesterday, and are extremely proud of all the members of the track team who pushed these individuals to excel."

The state middle school track meet will be held in Peoria on Friday, May 23 and Saturday, May 24. Kaneland athletes will participate in the Grand March on Friday, prior to the onset of competition. Those who finish among the top 8 in their respective events will be named to the All-State team.

Congratulations to the following state-qualifiers.
