IDOT increases safety measures for holiday weekend

Illinois transportation officials are increasing safety measures heading into the Memorial Day weekend.

Motorists can expect to see hundreds more seat belt enforcement zones and other patrols across the state.

Illinois Department of Transportation officials estimate more than 9,000 lives have been saved by seat belts since 1985 and that usage of seat belts in the front seat has reached close to 94 percent.

However, transportation officials say those between the ages of 20 to 34 represent over half of the deaths related to not wearing seatbelts.
