Man accused in shooting death of motorcyclist
GRANITE CITY - A southwestern Illinois man is jailed on $2 million bond after being accused of fatally shooting a motorcyclist whose body was found along a rural road.
Illinois State Police say 23-year-old Caleb Bailey of Pontoon Beach was charged Monday with first-degree murder in the death of Travis Mayes.
Police say 43-year-old Mayes was found dead shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday next to his motorcycle near his hometown of Granite City.
Authorities say a sheriff's deputy reported the case as a probable fatal accident before a 911 caller reported the motorcyclist had been shot.
State police say Bailey was a Mayes acquaintance. But no possible motive was disclosed.
Bailey doesn't have a listed home telephone number and couldn't be reached Tuesday. Online court records don't show whether he has an attorney.
