Chicago Archdiocese holds cemetery field masses

Cardinal Francis George and priests throughout the Chicago Archdiocese are planning to celebrate Memorial Day field masses at nearly 40 cemeteries across Cook and Lake County.

The masses will take place on Monday as part of the Catholic Cemetery Conference's "Serving God and Country: A Memorial Day Salute to Our Heroes" Program. Cardinal George is scheduled to say mass at 10:30 a.m. in Maryhill Catholic Cemetery in Niles.

The program honors men and women of the armed forces who died while serving their country, as well as active military members and veterans.

Archdiocese officials say all veterans will be asked to come forward for a special blessing during the ceremonies.
