Eyesore, or oasis?

This, folks, is a backyard fail! It's ugly, empty and poorly maintained. But even though its current state is more eyesore than oasis, I believe it has potential! In the area to the north of the sliding door that doesn't get enough sun for grass, I picture a brick-paver patio complete with a stylish and comfortable furniture set. In a trench that's good for runoff and not much else, I imagine a water feature and its calming water sounds. Under a maple tree on the west property line (see the pink flag) where roots pose a tripping hazard, I see a butterfly garden that attracts all sorts of colorful passersby. I also see a cedar pergola and my husband manning the grill underneath that we own but have no suitable place to put and our toddler frolicking in his plastic playhouse that looks like a miniature version of ours. I see all this accented by professional landscape lighting so that we can continue to enjoy it under the stars. ... Please Daily Herald, help us take our backyard from dangerous to dazzling, from muddy to magnificent. Help us get our summer on! Thank you!

From the experts:

• Water Feature: The natural stone patio is juxtaposed with a bold water feature and adjacent circular seat wall seating area. There's a balance and harmony to this modern space that is softened and enhanced by the gentle sound of falling water, the natural stone outcroppings, and the native woodland plantings.

• Eat & relax : A small outdoor kitchen makes this space a destination - for cooking, eating, and relaxing after a meal. The kitchen feels like it's part of the home and helps bridge the transition from architecture to landscape.

• Play area: The playhouse opens on a beach-like play area of crushed stone. An informal collection of boulders provides options for climbing, sitting, and jumping! What more could a child desire?
