Pie-shaped yard a challenge

We have a small pie-shaped backyard that has been a huge challenge to work with. But in spite of that, we managed to raise three children in our home, mostly because of a wonderful neighborhood that was filled with love and laughter and lots of wiffle ball in the street, hockey in the driveway and bicycling up and down the block. Now that the kids have all grown up and begun to move on, I would love to have a new backyard to entertain the adults in the neighborhood, or in which to just relax on a quiet summer evening. Our house is a Sears catalog home and it might be fun to play up that aspect of the house, with a period garden and terraced patio or pergola, though we are open to all ideas!

For a unique challenge in backyard design, our house is the one to pick!

Transformation by NorthWest Lighting and Accents

Budget: $2,000

From the experts:

This challenging space is small and irregularly shaped, drastically in need of a makeover to transform it into an outdoor oasis for relaxing and entertaining. First we suggest adding a landscaped border along the edge of the yard for a beautiful visual display from the house, while also providing privacy from the neighbors. Complementary flower beds were added throughout the landscape complete with lighting to accent foliage and provide path lighting. Next, we added a terraced patio in a curved design to help break up the geometric lines of the space. Outdoor lounge furniture compliments the patio providing a space to relax, unwind, and have cocktails with friends.

A) LED Path Lights spaced throughout the flower beds provide an illuminated pathway while also accenting low foliage. Long lasting and energy efficient, they require almost no maintenance.

B) LED Accent Lights highlight key features such as trees and large shrubs. With a variety of beam spreads and light levels, they help bring any landscaped design to life.

C) A pier mount coach light provides general lighting for the patio area. Use an LED replacement bulb for energy savings and longevity.

D) Outdoor LED Tape Lighting added under the ledge of the wall add ambient light to the patio area and highlight the stonework. Cuttable and customizable, it can complement a wide variety of indoor and outdoor applications.

E) LED Hardscape Lights installed under the steps provide crucial path lighting for navigating stairs and elevation changes at night.
