Quick-starting Conant tops St. Viator

Conant got out to a quick start, outscoring St. Viator 5-2 in the first period on the way to earning a 12-9 victory over the Lions in Palatine boys water polo sectional play on Wednesday.

Mid-Suburban League all-conference selection Connor Schmitz had 3 goals for the Cougars, who advance to meet Palatine in Friday's 4:30 p.m. semifinal.

• Kristiyan Kalev had 8 goals and Wally Kleinfeldt had 7 as the top-seeded Pirates ousted Elk Grove from the postseason 26-4.

• Second-seeded Hersey had a close call against Schaumburg, advancing 15-14 in a sectional quarterfinal.

Jack Carroll led the Mid-Suburban East champs in scoring with 5 goals, while Michael Buffa and George Vladimirov had 4 apiece.

Jack Pyde had a team-high 4 goals for Schaumburg and James Birriel had 3.

• Dylan Assmann scored a game-high 9 goals to help Fremd overpower Prospect 17-7. Luke Stark had 3 goals for Fremd, while Sam Gabriel and Nathanael Ginnodo had 2 each for Prospect.

Fremd will meet Hersey in a sectional semifinal contest at 5:45 p.m. Friday.

Mundelein sectional: Barrington advanced to Friday's semifinals with an 11-7 decision over McHenry. The Broncos next face Stevenson, a 21-8 winner against Lake Forest.

Wheeling saw its season come to an end in a 10-4 loss to Libertyville.
