Michigan recruit Ryan Nutof had it going Wednesday afternoon, with his arm and his bat.
The South Elgin senior pitched a complete-game 3-hitter with 12 strikeouts and drove in the game's only run in the top of the eighth inning as the Storm escaped Metea Valley with a 1-0 Upstate Eight Valley win.
Nutoff, who walked only 1 batter, doubled in Jared Kramer, who led off the ninth with a single, to lift the Storm (14-8) to the win. It was Nutoff's second hit of the game. Nick Menken also went 2-for-4 in the win.
CL South 7, Elgin 4: Ryan Hetherington had a double and 2 RBI, while John Constantino and Paul Wille (RBI) each went 2-for-4 to lead the Gators to a nonconference win. Nick Van Witzenburg also drove in 2 runs for Crystal Lake South (12-11). Jimmy Fischer picked up the win with 4 innings of relief. Jack Koeckritz was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Elgin. Jon Nelson took the loss.
Jacobs 5, York 1: Jake Jemmi had a 2-run double to spark a 4-run eighth inning for Jacobs (18-11) in this nonconference win. Grant Kale (3-for-4) and Matt Kozlak also doubled for the Golden Eagles, while Ryan Sargent was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Ben Murray drove in a run. Tim Hubner picked up the win, allowing just 5 hits with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks in 7 innings. Jemmi pitched a scoreless eighth.
Larkin 4, St. Charles North 3: Johnny Avila scored on a balk in the top of the ninth inning as Larkin (11-16) came away with an Upstate Eight River win. Rob Bond and Dan Lenz each had 2 hits with a double and an RBI for the Royals. Jack McCracken pitched 8 innings for the win and Brayden Royse set the North Stars down in the ninth to earn the save.
Cary-Grove 6, CL Central 2: Daniel Schmidt had a double and 2 RBI to lead the Trojans (17-9) to a Fox Valley Conference crossover win. George Hartke (2-for-3), John Carone (2B), Nick Franz (RBI) and Mitch Emond (RBI) also contributed. Brian Flanagan pitched the final 4 innings in relief of Schmidt to earn the win.
Johnsburg 6, Hampshire 5: Michael Merchut was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI and RJ Consigny went 2-for-4 for Hampshire (10-15) in this FVC Fox loss. Brandon Bowen also drove in 2 runs for the Whip-Purs. Andrew Brown suffered the loss in relief of Kyle Rutkowski.
