Cupcakes, cookie sale to benefit special needs

Have some fun, buy some homemade cupcakes and cookies, and support special needs children at the same time on Sunday, May 18.

Cupcakes and Cookies for College will be from 12:30-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, at Kirk School, 520 S. Plum Grove Road, Palatine.

You can buy homemade treats, and join in Kirk School's Walk and Wheel-a-thon at the same time.

Statistics show that autism is on the rise, now diagnosed in 1 in 68 children. As well, young adults with autism and other developmental disabilities need education and vocational training through high school and continuing past their 22nd birthday, at which time the state stops supporting them. Illinois is considered 47th-51st in the nation in funding for developmental disabilities.

The event raises money for scholarships benefiting adult students with developmental disabilities in the Career Skills Institute and other programs at Harper College, as well as Autism Speaks and Kirk School's Special Olympics program.

Entry is free, and cupcakes and cookies are priced at $2 each or a dozen for $20. Volunteers willing to bake will be gratefully accepted. Visit www.cupcakes2014.weebly.com to register.
