Zonta Club awards scholarships, service grants

The Zonta Club of St. Charles-Geneva-Batavia and Zonta West-Illinois distributed $17,000 in grants and scholarships at its annual awards banquet May 6 at Geneva History Center.

The club seeks to advance the status of women through local service projects and fundraising for scholarships and service grants supporting women's issues.

This year's scholarship program was funded with support from the EFS Foundation of Elgin, the Trust Company of Illinois, community supporters and the fundraising efforts of all the club members. Thanks to this generosity, many young women will continue to have the opportunity to advance their educational careers.

This year's scholarship winners are Danielle Brown, Kristin Burke, Alexis Guttilla, Madeline Horton, Mayra Loera, Hallie McQueeny, Anastasia Mistak, Veronica Seawall, and Monica Zimmerman.

Service grants supporting women's issues were awarded to: Community Crisis Center in Elgin, Mutual Ground in Aurora, CASA Kane County, Association for Individual Development, Lazarus House in St. Charles, Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley, Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois, and LivingWell Cancer Center in Geneva.

A contribution was also made to Zonta International in support of women's international service projects in Rwanda, Honduras, Samoa and Liberia administered by UNICEF and UNIFEM.

Zonta is dedicated to eradicating domestic violence, gender-based violence, human trafficking and childhood marriage.
