Bloom helps Hoffman power past Libertyville

Ethan Bloom hit a 3-run homer in the first inning against Libertyville and the host Hawks were able to stay in front and claim a 5-4 victory in nonconference baseball Saturday.

Matt Roesch also doubled and scored in the first inning for Hoffman Estates (9-13-1).

Winning pitcher Jack Kelley allowed 2 runs in 5 innings and struck out seven.

Brad Demmon relieved with the tying runs on base but was able to get three straight outs to earn a save.

Barrington 6, Dundee-Crown 5: Dan Kubiuk drove in a tying run in the bottom of the eighth with a triple and ended up scoring the winning run on a hit by Luke Johnson as the Mid-Suburban West leaders improved to 23-6 in a 6-5, 8-inning nonconference decision.

Jake Petersen doubled and drove in a run for the Broncos, and Jack Covek earned a victory with 2 innings of relief work.

Maine South 11, Maine West 8: The visiting Warriors scored 6 unanswered runs over the final three innings but still were unable to catch the Hawks in a Central Suburban League crossover.

Geoff Duckmann, Chris Selgrad and Austin Jablenski produced 2 hits apiece, and Dillon Ronan went 3-for-3 and scored twice for Maine West (10-13).

Elk Grove 5, Plainfield East 4: Johnny Assimakopoulos singled to score Christian Camacho in the eighth inning, helping the visiting Grenadiers (17-8) pick up a nonconference victory.

Josh Bergbreiter had a day to remember at the plate for Elk Grove, going 5-for-5 with 2 doubles. Assimakopoulos finished 3-for-3, while Camacho had 3 hits and Daryl Rivera had 2 hits.

Rivera pitched 4⅔ scoreless innings and got the win in relief, and Adam O'Malley pitched 1 inning to get a save for Elk Grove.

Buffalo Grove 7, Lake Zurich 3: Justin Hasek went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, Sean Edgar had a pair of hits and Nate D'Onofrio tripled and scored to help BG (8-16) pick up a nonconference win at home. The Bison came from behind as starter Brendon Murphy got the win and Andrew Barger threw 3 scoreless relief innings to get the save.

Hersey splits with Hononegah: The Huskies got a complete game 2-hitter from Ryan Allain to win the first game 3-0 as C.J. Reichel had a pair of hits.

The Huskies (12-13-1) struggled at the plate in Game 2, generating just 3 hits in an 8-0 loss. Jack Warner had Hersey's only extra-base hit, a double.

Warren 9, Fremd 5: In a game that was tied 4-4 after the fifth inning, the visiting Blue Devils (17-9-1) scored five times in the sixth inning to take control on the way to a nonconference win.

Austin Jetel, Ian Bohn, Matt Gura and Marcus Middlebrook each had 2 hits for Fremd (10-13).

Vernon Hills 3, Palatine 2 (8 inn.): Matt Saltess doubled twice, but the host Cougars pushed across a run in the bottom of the eight to claim a nonconference win. Alexander Breytenbach did all the pitching for the Pirates (17-13), striking out and allowing 3 earned runs in 7⅓ innings.

Christian Liberty splits: The Chargers prevailed 5-4 against Northridge Prep in 8 innings to take the first game before dropping a 9-7 decision in the second game.

Christian Liberty scored once in the eighth inning to help make a winner of Tom Keplar in Game 1.
