Jazz concert, alumni reception

Enjoy the swinging big band sound of the Harper College Jazz Lab Band at a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at the Performing Arts Center on the College's main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine. Harper alumni are also invited to a cocktail and hors d'oeuvres networking reception beforehand from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the PAC.

Led by well-known Chicago jazz pianist and recording artist Ken Spurr, students in the Jazz Lab Band practice improvisation and small-group performance techniques and produce a recording in a professional studio. Spurr, who has played or recorded with many local jazz artists such as Jackie Allen, Nick Tountas and Joel Spencer, teaches jazz piano at Harper and Elmhurst College.

Tickets to the concert cost $7 to $10 and kids 12 and under can attend for free. Visit harpercollege.edu/box office or call 847.925.6100. Tickets to the Harper College Alumni Program's An Evening of Jazz event, which includes the cocktail reception and concert, are $25 and can be purchased at harpercollege.edu/foundation.
