Lisle's bats lose momentum

To see what the Lisle softball team is capable of offensively, one only need to look at the sixth inning of Friday's home game against Peotone.

The Lions struck for 3 runs on 3 hits and put six total runners on base. The team was just one hitter shy of batting around.

The problem was that was the only big inning for Lisle. The Blue Devils scored in every inning but the first en route to a 13-3 Interstate Eight Conference victory.

"We have to do that earlier and more often," said Lions coach Jennifer Pomatto, whose team opens play in its own Class 2A regional in 10 days. "We're going to keep trying to eliminate mistakes and play the best that we can going into the postseason."

Lisle (9-11, 3-10 IEC) began the sixth inning with Julia Ullmann walking with one out. She moved into scoring position when Summer Stitt's well-placed groundball turned infield hit, and both runners came home when Erica Krause crushed a triple to left. Lauren Holub followed with a single to left, which scored Krause.

Scoring opportunities had been few and far between for the Lions during the first five innings. Lisle's first baserunner of the game was Erin Johnson, who was hit by a pitch in the first and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Catherine Coppin walked in the second, Megan Carlson did the same in the third and the Lions got their first hits of the game in the fourth. Stitt hit a single that just reached the lip of the outfield and Krause put another well-placed groundball out of the reach of the Peotone infield for an infield hit. Stitt and Krause each had 2 hits.

Lisle returns to action Monday at longtime rival Westmont for a two-game series with the teams going back to Lisle on Tuesday. Both games start at 4:30 p.m.

The Blue Devils improved to 16-8, 8-2 with the victory. Peotone scored 8 of its runs in the final two innings and finished with 18 hits.

Peotone plays host to No. 17 Glenbard South on Saturday in a doubleheader. The Blue Devils were only one of five teams to stop the Raiders during Glenbard South's trek to the Class 3A title last season

"We'll need to come out swinging and ride this momentum from today. We struggled early in the week with runs," said Blue Devils coach Andy Zwolinski.
