Waukegan man pleads not guilty in fatal shooting

A Waukegan man accused of shooting a 53-year-old man after an argument in March pleaded not guilty to murder charges in Lake County court Thursday.

Miguel Leyva, 24, of the 1700 block of Golf Road, faces a sentence of 45 years to life in prison if he's found guilty of killing Adrian Villarreal, 53, of Waukegan. Leyva is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Authorities said Villarreal was pronounced dead after he was found unresponsive and with a gunshot wound in his vehicle near Hickory and Center streets on March 15.

Leyva was arrested and charged March 24 after authorities determined the two men were acquaintances who had met and argued the night of the murder. Authorities said they recovered the weapon used in the shooting.

Lake County Judge Daniel Shanes set a hearing for June 23, and a trial date in July.

Leyva remains held in Lake County jail on $3 million bail.
