Local martial arts academy challenges its students
On Sunday, May 4, the American Kyuki-Do Federation (A.K.F.), headquartered out of Elgin, hosted its annual Spring Tournament of Champions at the Huntley Park District.
Local A.K.F. affiliate Kyuki-Do Martial Arts of Huntley, with 36 of its students, and their families and friends, attended this daylong, yet fun-fuelled event.
"The art of kyuki-do, while largely unknown, was formed in 1979 when Grand Master Ok Hyung Kim saw the benefits of blending several styles of martial arts together. By blending the core martial arts of tae kwon do, judo and hapkido, the newly created art of kyuki-do allows its practitioners families to train together in each class while all are achieving individual successes," says Rick Bjorkquist, who is co-owner of Kyuki-Do Martial Arts of Huntley since January 2010.
"While there are always the immediate benefits of health, physical fitness, and self-defense," Rick says. "The art of kyuki-do, and its tournaments, do not focus on defeating others; instead, it focuses on overcoming one's fears and perceived limitations."
