Illinois spring bird count to take place Saturday

Bird migration through Illinois peaks this month, and this Saturday is the statewide spring bird count event.

In a tradition going back 40 years in Illinois, volunteers will fan out to tally species and bird numbers from dawn to dusk.

Last year, bird lovers logged a record-high 275 different bird species.

The count will cap a week of events at sites along the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers and across the state. They will include a bird walk hosted by the Urbana Park District.

Naturalists will lead morning bird walks at the Trailside Museum in River Forest and the Sand Ridge Nature Center in South Holland, among other locations.

A combination birding-paddling event will take place at the Skokie Lagoon.
