Elgin side yard

My wife and I live in a quaint Victorian home, constructed in 1902, in Elgin. This winter we had to remove a beautiful ash tree, because of emerald ash borer infestation, from our backyard patio. It rendered shade, charm, character and a quaint retreat from the summer sun.

If we were chosen as a winner of your backyard improvement contest it would be such a blessing to my wife and I. Undoubtedly, a backyard improvement would enhance our 114-year-old home which we diligently endeavor to preserve. It seems so empty now that our once-regal tree is gone.

We know that our tree cannot be returned, yet we are confident that a solution can be created to maintain the charm of our yard, the character of our home and the feel of this historic neighborhood. Of course, entertaining our family, friends and neighbors will be a delight as well.

Thank you for considering our home as one of your candidates for a backyard improvement.

From the experts:

This Victorian home had a nice space to relax, until a necessary tree removal this winter.

Now the space is bare, uninviting and sad. These homeowners want their yard to reflect the Victorian era, bring some charm and offer a nice spot to relax and entertain friends and family.

We suggest the following:

• Small paver patio area for grilling, eating and lounging,

• Plantings to screen and soften the street and neighbors and bring in some color.

• Garden accents with bird bath and planters to give the area some character and charm.

• Garden arbor into the space.
