See Karl Jahnke's artwork in exhibit at Elgin studio

Side Street Studio Arts, 15 Ziegler Court in Elgin, will debut "Karl Jahnke: Super Genius of the Artworld," a solo exhibition of the work of area-artist Karl Jahnke. Jahnke's work combines traditional painting and the latest trend in art: street sculpture.

The exhibition will run May 2-25, with an artist reception Friday, May 2 from 6 to 10 p.m., featuring a live DJ set by DJ TwoSmooth.

"We first encountered Karl's work and sense of humor during our Something Wicked exhibition last October," said Side Street director Tanner Melvin. "He is prolific. His paintings are magical and haunting, and his sculptures are like nothing we've ever seen. That's why he is the first solo show we have featured at Side Street."

Jahnke, a resident of Crystal Lake, was an Audience Choice Award Winner at last year's Next Wave Art Salon in Elgin, and has shown all over Illinois and in Wisconsin, California, and New Mexico.

"As an artist I often feel as though I am taking the long way home," states Jahnke's artist statement. "Every piece represents a different journey, provoking questions and new lessons, each fueling a desire to see what comes next. This anticipation, this discovery, is what above all else drives my art and produces works that are woven with affection and passion. Each sculpture or painting is more than a piece of art - it is an intimate reflection of a newly discovered adventure."

Gallery hours during "Karl Jahnke: Super Genius of the Artworld" will be from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday to Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays. For information on Jahnke's work, visit www.karljahnke.com.
