Wheaton kite-flying event 'perfect way to kick off spring'

Wheaton celebrates spring with annual kite-flying event Saturday

Wheaton Park District officials are hoping to break a record this year by having more than 843 kites in the sky at the same time during the Go Fly a Kite! event.

Guests are welcome to make a kite, fly a kite and watch the professional Chicago Fire Kite Team put on a kite show during the free event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, in Graf Park, 1855 Manchester Road, Wheaton.

The Grand Launch at 11 a.m. is when participants will fly their kites simultaneously in an attempt to break the record.

A contest for most unusual kite is new this year. Judges will announce the winner at 1 p.m.

There will also be family friendly games, kites for sale, concessions and a business vendor expo at the event.

"After the long winter, this annual kite event is the perfect way to kick off spring," Kristina Nemetz, supervisor of special events for the Wheaton Park District, said in a news release.
