Fresh five thrive, but Warren falls to Lake Forest

Five fabulous freshmen are getting their kicks for Warren's girls soccer team.

Kaitlyn Chomko, Lindsey Hardiman, Alliyah Parker, Alissa Ramsden and Natalee Slater are starting and have helped the Blue Devils put together a successful run.

"I think we're playing very well against some players who are taller and older," said Ramsden, who plays on defense and in the midfield. "It's a great honor to be playing (on varsity) as a freshman."

The "Fab Five" couldn't help the Blue Devils from suffering a 2-1 loss to host Lake Forest in a North Suburban Lake Division match Thursday, however.

Warren fell to 6-4-1 and 2-1-1 in the NSC Lake, while Lake Forest improved to 7-4-1 and 1-2.

"It was a little nerve wracking at first," Warren coach Ryan McCabe said of starting five freshmen. "All five of them are quality players. It wasn't a matter of looking ahead to the future. It's the best players that will play. Those girls have earned themselves a spot. It's invigorating to have the young players leading the charge."

Ramsden gave her best shot and scored her third goal of the season in the 68th minute off a feed from Hardiman, giving Warren a 1-0 lead.

"Both are very skilled and hard workers out there," McCabe said. "They each have a great attitude, and it matches well with the veterans that have the same type of mental attitude."

Lake Forest scored a couple of late goals. Delaney Williams tied the score in the 73rd minute after taking a long service from Kendall Hoke.

Then, Williams was taken down in the penalty area in the 78th minute. Lucy Edwards converted the game-winning penalty kick.

"You don't want to lose by a PK," Lake Forest coach Ty Stuckslager said. "It's a tough way to lose. Warren is a good young team. They're coached well and disciplined."

Warren will have a makeup game at 6:30 p.m. today, as it hosts Highland Park on breast cancer awareness night.
